Rojak

One of Singapore’s famous delights is rojak. Rojak is actually the Malay term for “mixture”. It is basically a traditional fruit and vegetable salad dish. The dish consist of pineapples, cucumbers, dough fritters or 油条 (you tiao, a term more commonly used by Singaporeans), mang guang (yam bean/jicama), beansprouts, tau pok (a type of bean curd) mixed in shrimp paste and topped with chopped peanuts. While the idea of shrimp paste may scare some people, mostly tourists who aren’t used to the taste, some people actually love and enjoy shrimp paste in the rojak.

In today’s post, I will be recommending some of Singapore’s famous rojak stalls to all of you.

The first stall that I will be talking about today is Hoover Rojak. Hoover Rojak is one of the famous rojak stalls in Singapore. The secret to this popular rojak that leaves many wanting more and more after the first bite is… the special prawn paste blend! In the special prawn paste, other than the usual prawn paste and belacan powder, he actually adds in jellyfish for the extra crunchiness and also ginger flower and lime for the extra kick! Also, one thing I found special about their rojak is that you could ask for century eggs to be mixed in as well! I find this very creative and unique as no other rojak stalls have this in their “menu”. Therefore, for those who want to have a taste of traditional rojak, do visit Hoover Rojak for a treat!

Balestier Road Hoover Rojak

Another famous rojak stall in Singapore is Soon Heng Rojak. Soon Heng Rojak has also been featured on many television shows and magazines/newspapers in Singapore. That is also one of the reasons why the queue at Soon Heng Rojak is so long. However, the most contributing factor as to why it is so popular is because of the generous serving! There is also cuttlefish included, which is very generous for a $3 rojak. Also, the sauce is sweet and not “watery”, unlike other sauces that are too “watery” and not sweet enough. In addition, as compared to the “traditional” way of preparing the dough fritters (by grilling them), Soon Heng Rojak oven-bakes the dough fritters before it is served! This is healthier as charcoal grilling is not that good for your health. Thus, I would definitely recommend this stall to all of you, as long as you don’t mind waiting a long time for it.

We have came to the last rojak stall up for recommendation today. The last stall that I will be recommending is the Toa Payoh Rojak. Some say that it is the best rojak stall in the whole of Singapore. The queue is so long that they even implemented a numbering system so as to increase efficiency. The sauce from this stall, needless to say, is heavenly as well. The sauce is sweet and yet spicy at the same timemaking your taste buds tingle from the sensation. The tau pok and dough fritters here are very crispy and the prawn paste had a good fermented flavour. The ingredients are all fresh and good-tasting. You have to taste it to believe it! Don’t give this a miss when you’re in Singapore!

Wow!! The pictures definitely looked very appetizing and appealing. I've never tried eating rojak before but seeing your pictures is really tempting me to go ahead and try them out! And really, thanks for writing down the addresses of the good rojak stalls! It really helps me save time searching for those stalls you recommended. Good job on writing out the meticulous details of each stalls as well! It gave me a lot more information on those rojak stalls than I would ever know if I were to try searching by myself. Hope you can continue to recommend some really good foods! (;
